The 2008 National Religious Broadcasters convention was held in Nashville, Tennessee at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center March 8th through the 11th. The NRB is the premier gathering of its kind, featuring over 300 Ministries, Television Networks, Radio Stations, Web sites, Publishers, Producers, Programmers, and all manner of media professionals from the four corners of the Judeo-Christian world. These diverse organizations come together once a year to show their mediums and share their message. Exhibition nooths were filled with everything from High Definition cameras to falafel sandwiches. The massive convention center was decorated with colorful designs and high tech displays. GCN’s exhibit featured two sets for live interviews, with one after another sit-downs with producers, programmers, authors, comedians, recording artists, and even former Ms. Universe. People came from all over the convention hall to the GCN digs to check out the exhibit and listen in on exclusive interviews.
The 135,000 square foot convention hall wasn’t the only place bustling with activity. Debater and Christian scholar Dinesh D’Souza went head-to-head with social scientist and publisher of Skeptic Magazine, Michael Shermer, in a debate meeting at the crossroads of faith and intellect. Evenings at the NRB brought even more fun. Disney’s Mark Zoradi, Glen Kean, and Jodi Benson delivered an artful presentation on the “Power of Story Telling.” GCN interviewed Simon Swart of Fox Faith who gave a pull-no-punches challenge to Christian film and media producers to not only get outside of, but to evacuate “the box” with a heightened level of urgency and creativity to reach a new generation. The stand up comedic stylings of top comedians, including Scott Wood, were featured in the “Night of Comedy.” Laughs were followed by guitar riffs, drum kits, and jamming as hundreds gathered for the melodic brandings of top song singers and bands in NRB’s “Monday Night Madness.” Tuesday saw Ben Stein premier his highly anticipated and controversial film, “Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed”; a documentary openly questioning the monopoly of evolutionist thought in class rooms and curriculums across America. And what would a convention be without the W? President Bush himself addressed the NRB convention, and GCN got an exclusive interview with…well, the next best thing.
